It’s 2019 — yet the world can be a tough and dangerous place for too many people in the LGBTI community. Hate-motivated violence against LGBTI people is widespread, brutal — and often the people who perpetuate it escape with no consequences for their actions. Meanwhile, LGBTI individuals face increased hurdles due to discriminatory laws, angst of societal perception and ridicule, and fear of persecution and death.

In 2016, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) appointed an Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This vital role has a huge responsibility — to ensure the rights of LBGTI people everywhere are protected, to raise awareness of violence and discrimination, and to identify and address the root causes.

Lives depend on this role — yet the Independent Expert’s current term is set to expire this July, and it’s unclear whether the role will continue. This risks the rights of LGBTI people falling further behind — with violence, discrimination and poverty too common in the lives of LGBTI individuals.

Join us -— urge the UN to stand up for the rights of LGBTI people, by reappointing the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.
