Human rights defenders across the globe face threats, violence, and imprisonment. This is the situation of Hoda Abdel Moneim, an Egyptian lawyer and human rights advocate, who is currently imprisoned under dire conditions. Hoda, a volunteer consultant for the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF), has been honored internationally for her work but treated unfairly in her own country.
Hoda, a former member of the National Council for Human Rights in Egypt, has been barred from receiving visits at Al-Ashir Men Ramadan Women’s Prison in Sharqia, Egypt. Visits were previously allowed but the prison administration has reimposed restriction.
Her initial sentence ended, but authorities renewed her detention, placing her in pretrial detention with the same charges. This violates the principle of the Egyptian Code of Civil Procedure, that one cannot be tried and punished twice for the same offense.
Since her detention, Hoda’s health has drastically deteriorated. She suffers from severe knee osteoarthritis, cartilage erosion, a heart attack, high blood pressure, a blood clot in her left leg, and complete left kidney failure. Despite her critical condition, prison authorities have refused to transfer her to an external hospital for necessary medical care.
