Foreign aid is a tiny fraction of the federal budget — less than 1% — but its impact is enormous. U.S. funding supports HIV treatments, food aid, and disaster relief, saving millions of lives each year. Without this funding, programs that fight diseases like malaria and polio, deliver prenatal care, and provide humanitarian assistance will come to a sudden halt. Already the stop-work order on U.S.A.I.D.-funded research has left thousands of people with experimental drugs and devices in their bodies, with no access to monitoring or care.
This freeze also threatens billions of dollars for farmers and businesses within the US. Currently over $340 million of U.S. food aid worth over $340 million — including rice, wheat and soybeans are all stuck in US ports.
Congress controls the federal budget so lawmakers have the power to reverse this dangerous decision. If they fail to restore aid programs and USAID, there will be devastating consequences for millions of people worldwide.
