Every year, an estimated 88 million tonnes of food is wasted across EU countries. Meanwhile, 1 in 9 people worldwide struggle to find enough food to lead a healthy life. This is a scandal.
Over the last year, more than 100,000 people have called on the EU to agree to an ambitious plan to halve food waste by 2030, from farm to fork. And we’ve seen incredible success — in March the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of this proposal, despite all odds. But at the last hurdle, many countries — including the UK — are fiercely resisting the food waste targets , building serious pressure to delay and water down these ambitious commitments, or even scrap the targets completely. We can’t let this happen.
Discussions are ongoing, andbefore the year is out, EU leaders will meet in a showdown to determine the future of food waste in the EU. Without public pressure, this could all fall apart, and food will continue to be thrown to landfill whilst children go hungry.
We desperately need some friends within the EU. Italy and France have shown great leadership tackling food waste in the past. If you agree that food waste is a scandal, sign the petition calling on the EU to halve food waste by 2030, from farm to fork. Then, send a message to the French and Italian Environment Ministers — responsible for initiatives to reduce waste and improve sustainability — asking them to lead other European countries to support the amibitious targets.
