South Africa: Use the G20 to Deliver Power to 1 Million People

We’re asking South African leaders to speak up and urge countries like the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and Canada to provide access to energy.

What to know:

  • Africa gets just 2% of clean energy funding, even with all the sun, wind, and local solutions to lead.
  • With South Africa leading the G20, it’s time to press countries like the UK, France, and Australia to support energy access.
  • We’re aiming for 50,000 signatures. Add your name now — we’ll deliver the petition ahead of October 7-9.

Learn More about this cause:

Africa is full of sunshine, wind, and smart ideas — but more than millions of people still don’t have electricity. That means many homes are dark at night, hospitals can’t keep medicine cold, and students struggle to learn. At the same time, Africa has the youngest population in the world, and young people are already working on clean energy solutions — like solar panels, electric cooking, and wind power.

But these young innovators need help: more training, more funding, and more support to grow their ideas.

That’s why Global Citizen is asking governments to invest in special programs that support clean energy projects led by young people across Africa. These funds can bring electricity to 1 million people and train 50,000 young energy workers.

We’re focusing on South Africa, because it’s hosting the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial meeting from October 7–9. Global Citizen is in touch with South Africa’s Environment and Energy Ministers, and we’ll deliver your signatures directly to them before the meeting.

We’re also asking them to call on G20 countries like the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and Canada to help fund at least two clean energy projects — and unlock big private investments that can power schools, hospitals, and homes across the continent.

We’re aiming for 50,000 signatures. Add your name now — we’ll deliver the petition ahead of the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial meeting on October 7–9, urging South Africa’s environment and energy ministers to call on G20 countries to fund clean energy jobs across Africa.

Global Citizen is in direct contact with both ministers and will share the petition with their offices in the days leading up to the summit, along with key messages from young people across Africa.

We’ll also highlight the petition publicly across our platforms to ensure leaders know the world is watching.
