Between war, famine, the Covid-19 pandemic, and climate change, the poorest are being pushed further and further into extreme poverty. But in 2020, the government slashed billions from UK aid, leaving the most vulnerable at risk. Meanwhile, humanitarian crises haven’t gone away — they’ve intensified.
Overseas aid has been key to tackling issues from alleviating famine and supporting women on the frontline of the climate crisis to keeping girls in school and ending extreme poverty around the world.
The UK has been accused of choosing the “worst moment in history” to slash the foreign aid budget, and that it urgently needs to be increased to cope with the scale of humanitarian disasters worldwide.
Historically, UK aid has been a powerful tool, supporting more than half a million girls in education, ensuring 5.6 million safe births, vaccinating 76 million children, nearly eradicating polio, assisting in the fight against FGM, assisting millions of people in coping with the effects of climate change, and improving the nutrition of millions of people.
This is how effective UK aid is. However, once funding was cut, millions of people suffered.
