What could you buy for USD $1.90? A snack? Perhaps a bus ticket? Or a packet of painkillers, if you’re feeling ill?

Right now, more than 700 million people are surviving on less than this figure — every single day — to cover everything from food, rent, and clothes, to healthcare, education, and sanitation. Meanwhile, 26 men own the same wealth as the poorest 50% of the planet. Equality is still a long way off. As Global Citizens, we are one generation, joined by the same hopes, dreams and ambitions for this one, better future: a world free from poverty. But to defeat achieve this, everyone needs to be committed!

50 years ago, the members of the United Nations – including Germany – reached an agreement: to spend 0.7% of gross national income on development cooperation and humanitarian aid — to help end extreme poverty for good. So far, Germany has met this target only once in 2016 and there are signs of cuts in the coming years.

The numbers are clear: aid works. The number of people living in extreme poverty has more than halved since the 1990s — and more children than ever are surviving until their fifth birthday. Now, politicians need to step up and help to finally win the battle against poverty.

Every voice counts! Sign our petition to urge German decision-makers to make more funding available for the fight against poverty.
