One out of every three women worldwide will be physically, sexually or otherwise abused during her lifetime—with rates reaching 70 percent in some countries. Millions of girls and women are also held back by harmful laws, norms and practices that see women and girls killed for “honor” and girls pulled out of school and forced into child marriages. In some instances, countries lack the legislative and regulatory frameworks to protect women from marital rape and domestic violence.

Understanding the realities women and girls face is a critical step toward changing the culture and laws that allows gender-based violence and subjugation to occur every day.
