The world’s climate crisis didn’t come out of nowhere. A handful of countries have fueled it for centuries, while others, with far fewer resources, are already proving that cleaner, fairer futures are possible.
The United States, for example, is the single largest historic emitter of carbon dioxide, responsible for about a quarter of all greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution. Saudi Arabia, despite being one of the sunniest places on Earth, still burns oil for most of its electricity. Meanwhile, Latin America is showing what’s possible: Uruguay now runs almost entirely on renewables, and Chile is among the fastest-growing solar markets in the world.
By understanding which countries have the greatest responsibility and which are proving bold leadership, Global Citizens can push for fair solutions — from stronger national climate plans to finance for renewable energy in Africa. Because the atmosphere remembers every ton of carbon, and the choices we make now will decide who powers our future.
