Indigenous lands safeguard biodiversity, the global climate, and Brazil's living history. In 1988, the Constitution recognized Indigenous peoples' rights to their ancestral lands. But now, Law 14.701 reinstates the Marco Temporal theory — threatening everything.
This law attempts to restrict Indigenous rights only to lands occupied up until 1988 — ignoring centuries of violence, forced displacement and lack of bureaucratic documents needed to prove indigenous existence. It also creates new barriers to land demarcation, endangering lives and opening the door to further deforestation.
The world is watching: in 2025, Brazil will host COP 30, and it's time to show true climate leadership.
Support Greenpeace Brasil’s petition calling on the Government of Brazil to support Indigenous rights and reject the 'Marco Temporal'.Sign now and urge Brazil to respect the Constitution and protect the future of Indigenous peoples, forests, and the climate.
