The Amazon River mouth is one of the most biodiverse and fragile areas on the planet. It holds unique coral reefs, mangroves, rare fish species, and endangered animals like the manatee. But all of this is under threat: Petrobras wants to drill for oil in the region.
If an oil spill occurs, it would be almost impossible to contain due to the strong currents and the area's complexity. And the risks go beyond spills — noise from ships and machinery can disrupt the lives of animals like turtles, manatees, and even whales, affecting their communication and migration.
Worse still, Indigenous and riverside communities — those most affected — have not been properly consulted, violating their rights.
Despite warnings from scientists and environmental experts, much of the government supports oil drilling, claiming it's good for the economy. But this directly contradicts Brazil’s climate commitments, especially as COP30 approaches in Belém.
IBAMA recently approved a simulation plan for emergency responses — while this is not a green light to drill, it’s one step closer. Political pressure is mounting, even without full scientific studies and in the face of clear environmental risks.
That’s why we need to raise our voices! Record a short video telling Petrobras and the Brazilian government why you oppose oil drilling in the Amazon — and send it to us. No oil in Amazon!
