As the calendars turn to May, protests heated up in Spain, Turkey, and Armenia and Cubans took to the streets to celebrate International Workers' Day. Spring brought with it heavy rains in Syria, warm weather in Washington D.C., and tulips in Germany.

3) Protests in Spain: People shout slogans during a protest in Pamplona on April 28 after five men, accused of gang raping a woman at Pamplona's bull-running festival, were sentenced to nine years in jail for 'sexual abuse,' avoiding the more serious charge of rape. The men had been accused of raping the woman at the entrance to an apartment building in Pamplona on July 7, 2016, at the start of the week-long San Fermin festival, which draws tens of thousands of visitors.

11) Tulips in Germany: Workers prepare to separate the blossoms from the rest of the plant on May 2 in Magdeburg, Germany. The tulip bulbs are cleared and processed during the months of July and August. The manufacturer of flower bulbs in Saxony-Anhalt will cultivate 40 hectares this year with 10 different varieties of tulips. The tulip bulbs are marketed throughout Europe following the harvest.

Egypt temporarily opened Rafah crossing point on the borders with the Gaza Strip in both directions for three days.

16) Violence In Kashmir: Kashmiri Muslim mourners carry the body of Sameer Ahmad Bhat during his funeral on May 1 in Drabgam, Kashmir, India. Thousands of people participated in the funeral of Bhat, a top commander of the Hizb ul Mujahideen militant outfit. He was killed along with an associate during a gunfight with Indian forces in Pulwama district of Indian-administered Kashmir on Monday. A teenage boy was later killed as Indian forces opened fire on Kashmiri civilians protesting the killings of the militants. The region remained shut on Tuesday in response to a shutdown call by separatist leaders against the killings.
