James Patterson, an american author/literary genius, is donating another $1.75 million USD to school libraries across the United States.
Patterson's School Library Campaign, in partnership with Scholastic Reading Club, gave hundreds of schools grants in 2015, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 USD. The author plans to continue this trend of giving in 2016.
In a statement, Patterson emphasized "the vital role reading plays in children's lives."
Reading, and reading to children, is important for development.
Even reading to toddlers and preschoolers can help them develop a higher aptitude for learning in general. Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all forms of formal education.
In school, a focus on reading can help kids improve their basic speech and writing skills. Children can develop better communication skills, while accumulating a broader vocabulary.
Further, fictional and nonfictional stories can offer children a relatable story or role model to help ease the transition during major milestones of a child’s life.
By donating this huge chunk of change, Patterson will enhance the educational learning of children across the country.

The author is most recognized for his fictional novels such as the Alex Cross Series, Women’s Murder Club, Maximum Ride, and Daniel X series-- not to mention, his many stand alone thrillers and romance novels. Many people are not aware of Patterson’s long history as a literary philanthropist.
In November 2015, Patterson received the Literarian Award from the National Book Foundation, which cited him as a "passionate campaigner to make books and reading a national priority. A generous supporter of universities, teachers colleges, independent bookstores, school libraries, and college students, Patterson has donated millions of dollars in grants and scholarships with the purpose of encouraging Americans of all ages to read more books."

Patterson first got started on his mission to make all children life-long readers when he noticed his own son, Jack, wasn’t too fond of reading. In 2008, he launched his youth-focused website, ReadKiddoRead.com, which is dedicated to helping parents find books that will get their kids reading.

James Patterson is a lifelong champion of books and reading and his dedication to the engagement of children with reading is outstanding.
